Many international students who have left their home countries and hope to build a future in Taiwan are eager to learn Chinese but often struggle to find suitable learning opportunities. To help bridge this gap, our department launched a free course, providing a simple and accessible way for them to start learning. We specially invited a bilingual graduate student fluent in both Chinese and English to design the curriculum from scratch and personally guide students through the learning process, ensuring that they can follow along with ease.
The students’ enthusiasm for learning was incredible. Despite varying proficiency levels, they showed great patience in supporting one another. The instructor was also highly dedicated—not only preparing teaching materials but also reviewing lessons and collecting feedback after class to refine the course and better meet the students’ needs. The first lesson started with the basics, beginning with “bopomofo.” At first, both the teacher and students were a little reserved, as they were not yet familiar with one another. However, with the instructor’s patience in setting the tone, sharing his own experiences of learning Chinese, and easing into the lesson through casual conversation, the atmosphere quickly became more relaxed.
As the course progressed, the learning environment became more engaging. The instructor’s custom-made slides and materials, along with vivid analogies, made pronunciation easier to understand. Students had fun and actively helped each other correct mistakes. At times, they even requested extra practice sessions, making the classroom lively and full of energy. What started as a structured lesson soon evolved into a warm and friendly learning space where teachers and students interacted like friends. The course became more than just a one-way teaching experience—it was a collaborative journey of growth and cultural exchange.
This class is not just about learning Chinese—it’s about discovering the joy of language learning. We hope that the students will carry this passion forward, integrate Chinese into their daily lives, and use it to open doors to even more opportunities for global communication!
