The department hosted a "Chinese Calligraphy & Name Aesthetic Workshop" on the afternoon of April 10. This event invited students from all over the world to take up brushes and experience the long historical heritage of Chinese calligraphy amidst the scent of ink, integrating art into daily life by creating exclusive, exquisite bookmarks.
The workshop began with basic instruction, deconstructing the components of Chinese characters via a large screen—"The DNA of a Character: Mastering the Basic Strokes". Participating students started from the most fundamental horizontal, vertical, left-falling, and right-falling strokes, focusing on the flow of ink on rice paper and the control of strength. For many international students encountering brushes for the first time, this was not just writing practice but an in-depth training in balance, patience, and structural aesthetics.
The core session centered on applying calligraphy to the creation of personal name tags and bookmarks. Under guidance, students practiced rendering their Chinese names in calligraphic form. As the brush met the delicate bookmarks, participants wrote more than just words; they were redefining their own identities within a foreign culture. Each bookmark carried the participant's creativity, showcasing the unique charm of word art that transcends linguistic boundaries.
After completing the basic exercises, an international student happily displayed his written work, expressing longing for his family and his love for the art of Chinese characters. The atmosphere was lively and filled with an artistic sense.
As the event drew to a close, the venue was filled with the name bookmarks and calligraphic works created by the students. In an atmosphere rich with cultural spirit, the Department Director joined all faculty and students to showcase their hand-finished aesthetic bookmarks and take a commemorative group photo, bringing this journey of ink art to a perfect conclusion.
In addition to their busy studies, this workshop allowed students to experience the warmth and artistic height behind Chinese characters through meditative stroke-by-stroke practice, leaving them with precious handmade bookmarks as souvenirs.
