My Favorite Taiwanese Food

By Wendy Tang Yang

Five weeks have passed already since I came to Taiwan. I am studying in Taipei at The National Chengchi University (NCCU). I have tried several kinds of Taiwanese food, like Chou Tofu 臭豆腐, Kong Bao Ji Ding 宮保雞丁, Niu Rou Mian 牛肉麵. Most of them tasted really weird and I confess that I have not had all the meal. Nevertheless, after some time I was convinced by my new Taiwanese friends to try typical dishes. After I tasted some of them, I am sure that the flavour is different from the ones I am used to.

I have had several experiences trying the different type of foods that they have here. I think that some of them are not very tasty (as Taiwanese people consider tasty), although there are some that I totally agree when they say it is delicious. We can find a great variety of food here – especially in night markets. We can also find a lot of Taiwanese restaurants and other small shops where you can eat, and the dishes are not very expensive.

From what I have tried, I liked several dishes. One of them is a rice bread with meat filling, I am not sure how it is written but I think it is pronounced “Cha Shao Pao 叉燒包”, you can find it almost everywhere. There is another food that I love that is dumplings. You can get those near NCCU and I am using this factor very often. I have not seen another restaurant of dumplings, although I do not think that it is the only one. If anyone sees one, then don’t think twice and get in to taste it.

Unfortunately my favorite dumplings made me gain 3 kg already! Therefore I have to look for some new delicious healthier food. I am only finding those unhealthy ones, so far. Another example is ice-cream with fruits and a sauce of condensed milk. Absolutely amazing! I would love to taste some more typical food, but as I do not know enough Chinese I cannot order in most of the local restaurants. They usually do not have English menu either. Therefore, my favorite place for eating is the night markets. I can simply point at anything I want and get it. If you can’t wait until your Chinese is good enough and also want to try fancier food in numerous local restaurants like me, night market is always the best choice to go.
