My Favorite Taiwanese Food

By Walton

It is difficult for me to distinguish the most delicious Taiwanese food or my favorite Taiwanese food. I’ve been here for a month, today. I tasted many Taiwanese foods and I think those that I have eaten so far are all good, delicious, and I classified all of them as my favorite Taiwanese foods. All of them are good! When I am having trouble with identifying or naming which foods can be the favorite one, I usually let my stomach do the honor and make the selection. So, my theory is, always trust your gut! If your gut is making sounds, it means trouble, but otherwise, be quiet, sit down, and welcome the foods your stomach selected for you.

Because I am facing difficulties toward making the selecting of my favorite Taiwanese food, I will tell you my experiences in getting my delicious meals. I had encountered several interesting experience with getting around the many street markets, to pick and buy my delicious Taiwanese foods. And I can also tell you my experience I always had while eating my delicious food.

Most eating places can offer me what I will always like to take a bite or at least sniff it. Unfortunately, I can only get those that I can point at! I mean there is always the oral communication barrier. I often visited these places with the other international students and we usually go to the ones that we feel that the restaurant’s owner understands us or knows our desires. In fact, there are couple places that we are familiar with and we often visited, because for the most part, the owner already know what kind of food that these poor international students are crying for!

I also like to visit the, “kitchens”, as named by my Taiwanese dorm-mate. I enjoy coming to these type of restaurant, because I can find all I want to eat and I can easily tell the owner what I like. And not by saying it out loud, but by pointing! I like everything from the soup, or what most of my friends refer to as appetizer, all the way to the main dish. I admire how the kitchens’ owners on every corner of the Taipei streets serve their customers, especially the international customers. Whenever, me and the other international students approach a kitchen or restaurant, we often greeted by an appetizing smiles.

So, there I am, eager to take a bite of what my stomach already selected for me. I picked up the soup, if available or if my guts call for it, otherwise, I will often look around to make sure no body is looking at me. I will always make sure that I hold the chopsticks perfectly and in the most appropriate chopsticks manner. My stomach is already producing juices to digest what is about to come down my esophagus, but unfortunately, it has to wait, because my fingers are trying their best to hold the two pieces of sticks together and perfectly in a way that when I am picking up food, the chopsticks don’t fall apart.

At the very beginning of my each meal, I am doing perfect. I can pick up foods between the two sticks, just like a pure Taiwanese. This is often my most perfect time of the meal, especially, when someone at the table is telling me that I am good. And that really increase my appetite, but, within several minutes, my fingers become numb and the sticks start to slip, slide, and few times, fall down!

And, that’s it! I told you my experience in getting my favorite food. Unfortunately, I cannot identify my favorite Taiwanese food, and that doesn’t mean that I cannot find any, but it means that there are many out there and all of them are my favorite Taiwanese food.
